About 2 weeks ago, the temperature knob came off our oven - in two pieces. Being the resourceful Miss Fix-It type, I thought I'd repair it. Done it before, shouldn't be too much trouble, right?

HA! Nice try, but no... )

Kellie and I went back to St. Louis last week to see the family - including one Miss Rylee. It was a good visit, and of course I have pictures of the bebeh!

I'd write much more, but since I jammed my thumb the other day, I'm kind of limited on writing!! :-/

So, in the meantime, have some cute baby (and family) photos!

Yep, I'm going to be one of *those* people - someone that posts a billion pics of the new baby in the family. :-)

Now, it's pictures of the baby - and a couple of the baby and momma.

Yes, Kellie and I are now aunties! Rylee Marie was born on April 21st, weighed 7lbs. 4oz. and was 17 1/2 inches long.

And yes, we are looking very forward to being doting aunts and spoiling the munchkin rotten!

Of course, I have pictures - I'm posting a few tonight, and I'll post more (hopefully) tomorrow. :)

*blows the dust off the LJ*

Sorry I haven't been around in about a billion years - kind of got wrapped up in Twitter and Facebook! So, I should probably give an update on the family.

My sister is still very pregnant - today is her due date, actually. The past couple of weeks, she's been having intermittent Braxton-Hicks contractions with nothing happening. The other day, it was found out that she is finally dilating. Granted, she's been at 1 cm for the past couple of days, but it's progress. If there is no baby by next Friday, she's being induced to bring a new munchkin into the world!

Don't know if I'd mentioned it, but she is having a girl - to be named Rylee Marie. (I'm thinking that the "Rylee" is her way of adding her late dad's middle name (Lee) into the baby's name) So yeah, Kellie and I are waiting (somewhat) patiently for the word that we are officially aunties!

My brother and sister-in-law are in the process of adopting a baby - they've told the church's Social Services organization that they are not very picky about the baby. They want a child under 2 years old, race and gender don't matter. I kind of love that idea, knowing that my mom would probably freak out over the idea of having to tell people, "This is my black granddaughter/grandson". This may be another year or so process, so I'm keeping them in my thoughts, hoping that they'll have a munchkin of their own as well!

As for me ... I've been having some nasty problems with TMJ. Lots of grinding and clenching to where it felt like I had a toothache in a root canalled tooth.

Having had the dentist and one of her assistants telling me that I've been fortunate in that I haven't broken a tooth like quite a few of their patients have done, I felt kind of fortunate.... Then, a couple of weeks ago, I broke a tooth. While eating Frosted Flakes (Yes, I said FROSTED FLAKES) at work.

Got an appointment with the dentist for the next day to get examined - and was told that my tooth had broken "the right way", meaning that I still had part of my tooth and it didn't break down to the root. Then, they took an X-Ray and found that part of my tooth had broken below the gum line. Which meant that I had to have surgery before I could get a crown put on my tooth.

So the other day, I had my surgery. I was scared shitless by the whole idea of surgery, so I took 10 mg of Valium an hour or so before my appointment, which helped. I felt kind of loosey-goosey and relaxed. Then, add in the laughing gas, and I was very, very relaxed. To where I almost fell asleep during the procedure. (Really) Also it helped a lot that the surgeon talked to me for about a half-hour before the procedure, to let me know what would be happening - as well as talking about St. Louis (he went to Washington University for Dental School) and iPhones.

Afterwards, I was given a diet recommendation for about the first week or so. The first two days, I was on a pretty much all liquid diet with some very soft foods. Translation - my diet was bottles of Ensure, cottage cheese, applesauce and baby food (fruit flavors). Today I was able to start eating some more substantial foods - i.e.; pasta, chicken cut into little pieces, cheese, non-citrus fruits, fish and steamed vegetables. I'm not allowed caffeine, carbonated drinks, citrus fruits and juices (acidity), or using straws. Admittedly, I feel like a weirdo asking for a spoon instead of a straw at Jamba Juice!

My mouth is still sore on the left side (operated on side) - especially on the roof where I'd gotten the novocaine shots; and today I tried eating some of the more substantial foods - fruit, pasta and chicken - only to end up with a sore mouth! :-(

So that's my life right now. How about you all? How's life treating you? Hopefully better than it is for me!

With my sister giving birth in April (yeah ... in about 2 or so months. I'm feeling ancient here!) I've decided to do what I'm calling a "Book Project". This project involves gathering up favorite books of family members (aunts, uncle, mother) to give to my niece.

I've gotten the following books so far:

"The Poky Little Puppy" - my favorite
"The Monster At The End of the Book" - my brother's favorite
"I Am A Bunny" - Kellie's favorite
"Go, Dogs! Go!" - my sister's favorite

Along with "Pat The Bunny", "Good Night Moon" and "Harry The Dirty Dog" (another one of my favorites).

What I'll be doing is writing a note in the book like, "This was so-and-so's favorite book when they were a kid, and we want to share it with you". I will be doing this when my brother and sister-in-law have their own kids as well. :-)

Anyways ... I'd like to know. What was your favorite book as a kid?

Happy New Year to you all! :-D

I hope you're having a great time, no matter what you're doing to celebrate - and I hope that the new year is a very happy (and healthy) one!

Love,

It's probably really lame of me, but I kind of like fixing things around the house. I think it's because I like feeling useful, and the sense of accomplishment that comes from making something work again!

Rambling on plumbing work - I'm more qualified than Joe the Plumber, dammit!! )

And that was my foray into home repairs. Go me!

My Mom

hiddenmuse: (Smile!)
As you all may know, I was raised Mormon. My family (mom, brother and sister-in-law, and sister {kind of}) are active in the Church, and of course, the Mormon Church was a major force behind Prop 8 passing.

While my mom isn't particularly fond of my being a lesbian - and being married to a woman - she is doing as well as she can with the fact that I'm not the good heterosexual Mormon daughter she'd hoped for. Maybe my teenage sister being pregnant has helped that along - she realizes that while her family may not be the ideal Mormon family, at least she has us all together.

Anyways, yesterday, when she found out that Prop 8 had passed, she sent me this e-mail:

Hey Sweetie –

Just checking in. I saw that Prop 8 passed. Wanted to see how you & Kellie are doing. I haven’t seen much what this means to your marriage. Will it still be recognized?

My feeling is, if you are legally married, man & woman, woman & woman, man & man, you should still be able to stay married. The Govt. should not be able to step in and take that away.

I love you both. You know I don’t always agree with things you do and say, but I will always love you no matter what. I am here for both of you.

Love

Mom

That meant so much to me - that she has that concern about our marriage, as well as being upset over the state interference in anyone's marriage. Also, knowing that she loves and supports us - that really means so much. The last line, where my mom says that she doesn't always agree with what we do or say, that kind of rankles Kellie, she thinks that it's passive-aggressive. Honestly, I just look past it, like "whatever..." - that's such a small percentage of the whole message, it almost doesn't matter.

Since I didn't get back to her until later in the day, she called me in the evening, to see how Kellie and I were doing. In that "so cute and rather awesome" move, she asked me if we'd thought about moving to Massachusetts or Connecticut, where our marriage would be legal and recognized! And she also told me that no matter what happens in the courts, the most important thing is the love that Kellie and I have for each other.

The fact that my mom - a conservative Republican Mormon - could say and do this, is amazing. I never would've imagined that she would be this way when I'd finally came out to her last year.

So yay to my mom for making progress and being (relatively) cool about what's happening in my life!
hiddenmuse: (knock you out)
So yay! we've got a good man heading into office on January 20th.

He's got a shit-ton of messes to clean up, but I think he will do right by us all.

This was the first time since I first voted in a Presidential election (1992) that I was seriously excited about the process. I loved seeing the excitement that others have/had as well - and I was blown away by the fact that so many people were eager to vote, no matter how long the lines or any other obstacles.

My hope is that we can continue to have this enthusiasm in the days, weeks, months... even the years to come.

On the other hand ... Hey fellow Californians!! WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK WERE YOU THINKING?????

You DO realize that you've voted for an AMENDMENT to the State Constitution. You know what an Amendment is, right? There these crazy things that allow us to speak freely, own guns and vote when you turn 18 - regardless of your race and/or gender, among other things.

So, yeah ... you're allowing discrimination to be legal. Why? Because you are so afraid that my wife and I, among many other married gay and lesbian couples, are going to corrupt The ChildrenTM and ruin the importance and validity of your precious marriage(s) {please don't get me started on that...}, because we can get married? Guess what? It was legal for about 6 months, and never did I hear anyone tell me that because I had the right - and later exercised it - their marriage was suddenly invalid or coming apart because we could get married.

I don't care what you've decided, fellow Californians - Kellie and I are still happily married, whether or not the state officially recognizes it. You can't take away love - just doesn't work that way.

That is all.

Love (maybe),

Me

If you happen to believe this jackass:

For the record, we keep our recruiting to the *adults*, thankyouverymuch.

Speaking of recruiting, Kellie and I are going out as recruiters for Halloween next year. Yep, gonna hang out in The Castro, trying to recruit people into the happy Queer Nation! And honestly, the recruiting is done Glengarry Glen Ross-style: First place gets a trip to Hawaii, Second place gets a set of steak knives, Third place gets fired. So, it's not as easy as it seems! ;-D

First, Barack Obama - "I Would Make A Bad President" Obama Says in a Huge Campaign Blunder

And then, Cindy McCain - A Vote For My Husband Is A Vote for Me Not Breaking Your Fucking Neck

So, remind me to avoid Cindy McCain in a dark alley - she'll cut a bitch!
hiddenmuse: (Vote)
This is for everyone - my voting-age Lovelies in California, and the people that know and/or like/love us. :-)

There's a proposition (Prop 8) on the November ballot that will eliminate the right for same-sex couples to get married. If it passes, Kellie and I - as well as many other couples - may find ourselves "unmarried".

The Yes on 8 supporters are really strong - and the Mormon Church is getting in on the act, telling their members to rally their friends, families and others around them to vote yes. The mere fact that the church is getting into politics really chaps my ass - is there any way to petition for them to lose their tax-exempt status? :-X

In all seriousness, the No on 8 folks are losing their lead because the opposition is raising boatloads of money - which translates into getting their message (teh homosexuals are getting married - and they're going to corrupt The ChildrenTM!) out to far more people.

So, if you're in California - Get out and vote on November 4th, and please Vote NO on Prop 8! Also, please volunteer to help the No on 8 efforts, if you can.

If you're out of the state, or can't volunteer any time, and still want to help, please donate to No on Prop 8 - http://www.noonprop8.com.

Thank you very much for hearing (or reading) me out, and thanks in advance for your support!

Love to all,

Carly

Apparently, John McCain - luddite extrordinaire - helped to create the BlackBerry PDA.*

Yep, it had *nothing at all* to do with the Canadian firm Research In Motion, who were the actual inventors.

*Apparently this comment was semi-redacted as a "boneheaded joke" by a staffer. Still, it is quite funny. (At least, I think so!)

Maybe I just think way too much, but this afternoon, I was thinking about the film Sixteen Candles. You know the scene where Long Duck Dong tells Jake that Samantha "went to the church to get mah-reed"?

I want to know, how did Jake even know which church it was? Do they only have one church in Shermer, IL? Did he just drive all over the city looking for churches that were obviously hosting (or is it holding?) weddings? Or did he somehow find the wedding announcement in the paper?

Inquiring minds want to know. Any ideas or theories? Anyone?
hiddenmuse: (Gay Agenda)
Won't someone please think of The ChildrenTM? Apparently, as long as gay marriage is legal, according to the anti-gay marriage folks, "...teachers will be required to teach young children there is no difference between gay marriage and traditional marriage" starting in Kindergarten, no less!

The whole story is here. And yes, those wingnuts actually live in this state. Some of them even live in this city.

Now for something not so serious, I'm getting dental work done in the first week of August (getting a crown done) and I'm looking for recommendations on music to try and drown out the noise from the drill!

I've got some Metallica, so that's not a problem. But I'd like to have something besides that to listen to while I'm in the chair!

Any ideas?
