{Disclaimer: You all know that I'm a shiny happy moderate/borderline leftist - and I want Shrub and his band of merry men out of office as much as anyone else, so I'm not saying this as a sympathizer. I'm saying this as a voice of common sense. A reminder that we can all sit there and squall about the decimation of our First Amendment rights and civil liberties, or balk over the fact that some random person has an FBI file, thanks to Dubya and his cronies ... but it's been happening for decades. It's not a new thing. Far from it, my lovelies.}

With that, I present my two cents on the whole "I was visited by the FBI/Secret Service/DEA/Homeland Security/NSA/FDA/USDA/JAMA/Reno 911!/SWAT Team" Phenomenon that has been sweeping friends lists everywhere - and even being mentioned by Michael Moore, of all people.
Everybody must get Gobsmacked - or Hoodwinked: Annie's Story

Now, correct me if I'm wrong - but for everyone crying "1984!" or "It's so Orwellian!" or "Welcome to the Fourth Reich!" - there are a few of us chiming in with, "Hellooooo - you threaten a sitting President, you're gonna have the FBI at your doorstep, whether it's a real or perceived threat." There are even a few people suspecting scam, because the FBI *and* the Secret Service got involved - and they are regulated by two separate branches of the Government.

Anyways, there's a difference between being visited by the FBI for stating a dissenting opinion of the Presidentiary - and blogging what could be construed as a death threat, as Annie did in her entry: Annie's original entry

I'd have more sympathy for someone that has the FBI beating down their door because they'd written a vitriolic entry calling for Bush to be un-elected this coming Tuesday, delineating the major problems (in their opinion) with the President and his leadership - fault-finding is allowed. Politicians do it all the time, I believe it's called "mud-slinging". ;)

When someone writes - and publicly publishes - a screed asking for G*d (or wanting to do it themselves) to do in the President, detailing how they'd like to see the crime scene, you bet your Sweet Aunt Betty that you're gonna have Law Enforcement coming to ask questions. Lots of questions. Who's to say that someone that's "just kidding!" doesn't have the capacity to go off the deep end, psychologically.

Think about it: If someone were making threats against you, or stalking you, wouldn't you want that person to be checked out - to make sure that your life - or the lives of loved ones won't be in danger? It's the same principal, really. Just different players.

You can agree, you can dissent. It's a free country - I won't turn you into the FBI for not aligning with my viewpoint. ;) Just wanted to let you all know what you're defending and rallying to support.

In weirdness, one of the Internet radio stations that usually plays those fun, obscure tunes that I haven't heard in 300 years or more, ended up playing an ICE-T song from 1987. Really. I've gotten to where sometimes I still want to hear "There Goes The Neighborhood" or "KKK Bitch" from the Body Count days - but anytime I hear or see Ice-T's name, all I can think of is Law and Order - SVU, and him as Detective Fin Tutuola. (Yeah, over 10 years ago, he was singing "Cop Killer" - now he's playing a cop on TV.)

The Cardinals are getting their asses kicked something awful!! :( I just wonder - did they plan to just let the BoSox win, like its a pity series or something? I mean, Jeez Louise ... it's embarrassing!!

With that aside, I'm kind of getting things figured out with my asthma medicine - well, at least using the rescue inhaler. The Advair is pretty easy: One dose in the morning, one dose twelve hours later.

Some days, I've had to use the inhaler, while other days, I've managed to be "free and clear", so to speak. It seems to depend upon the weather, allergen exposures, and oddly enough - my hormone cycles.

Otherwise, the Advair has given me a mild case of thrush (an oral yeast infection) - in the form of "angular chelitis". In other words, the corners of my mouth are seriously dry and red (from the thrush), so I'm treating it with an antifungal/corticosteroid cream. The little bit of irony is that corticosteroids are what got me into this predicament in the first place (Advair has them).

Tomorrow, I go to the allergist for a follow-up visit - so I get to mention that my allergies are still driving me batty, and it would be nice to be able to take *something* to remedy them!

Gah ... having caffeine after a weekend off is messing with me. :-/ Perhaps I should've refrained from that Coca-Cola after spending the morning dealing with Albuterol jitters, eh?

In other news ... I talked to my mom and found out that in the time since my stepdad was diagnosed with testicular cancer (about 1 1/2 years ago), his parents have visited him twice - and called five times. If I'm not mistaken, one visit was spent talking about the fatality rate of testicular cancer. Jackasses.

It makes me not feel so bad about being so far away from the family. At least I keep in contact with them, even if I can't visit as often as I used to when I lived in St. Louis. That reminds me ... I'm so far behind in sending care packages to home. Perhaps I should send them something. :)

Otherwise, a quick update on my stepdad. He's still cancer-free, after over a year (thank G*d and Everyone Else). Currently, he's undergoing Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) to treat the kidney damage that resulted from chemotherapy and/or reaction to CAT scan dyes. His vision is improving - although some days, it still comes and goes.

A couple of weeks back, he went into the hospital, having had a possible mild heart attack. The cardiologist thinks that he might have stressed his heart from the PD and some minor complications that had come about. Next week, he goes in to get a heart monitor, to find out if he'd damaged any of his heart muscle - or to at least find out what's happening with his heart, period.

The current goal is to keep him out of the hospital for the rest of the year. Yeah, it feels kind of like dreaming the impossible dream, but I'd like to think that it's possible. In the meantime, Snickers (their Resident Cat) seems to enjoy watching the PD as it happens - something about watching fluid going through tubing amuses her. Kind of like our Resident Cats, high on Kitty KrackTM, watching the Litter Maid as it does its cleaning routine.

Today is shaping up to be one of those slow days that I despise. A day that seems to drag on forEVER. :-/

Although, there have been a couple of high points:

a) My LaunchCast station played Metallica's "Unforgiven" and the Violent Femmes' "Add It Up" - and I sang along, like the geek that I am.

b) A client called the Big Boss - not to complain, but to compliment - and I had the message passed along with a "congratulations" tacked on at the beginning. I have to say, it was nice to hear a client say something nice about my work - rather than calling to bitch because something wasn't done *yesterday*.

c) The Cardinals have won Game 6 - forcing a Game 7 in their series against Houston. Go Cards! (Part of me wants to see them go against the Red Sox, because they're my home team ... but another part of me wants to see the Astros - with Roger Clemens - go against the BoSox, just because I get a kick out of seeing former teammates playing against each other.)

So, yeah ... there's that. Not much else is going on around here.

Just one last thing - I want to play shameless promoter for a moment, if only because I like free stuff. And no, this doesn't involve a pyramid scheme to get an iPod. ;)

Actually, this is good for anyone that has Allergic Asthma - or knows someone that has it. The Allergy and Asthma Network/Mothers of Asthmatics is giving away copies of the book Allergic Asthma for Dummies by William E. Berger, MD, MBA. No strings attached - no signing your firstborn over to Hecubus - just fill out a simple form, and they'll send you a copy in the mail within 7 - 10 business days. :)

And oh yeah - their site is a great resource for parents of asthmatic children.

It's probably totally wrong of me to get even the slightest bit of pleasure from it, but there's just something about schadenfreude that just gets me all a-twitter.

Especially when it involves high and mighty people and their pedestals: Coming soon! "Hi, my name is Bill, and I'm a sex addict."

Read, absorb, and get that warm little twitter-pated feeling of schadenfreude for yourselves, my lovelies.

Then ponder why so many on the Right seem to be so fixated on sex.

Name a CD you own that no-one else on your friends list does: The oft-mentioned Tunes Young People Will Enjoy - Jesse Valenzuela

Name a book you own that no-one else on your friends list does: Adìos, Barbie edited by Ophira Edut (since re-titled Body Outlaws, cos Mattell wasn't too happy about the original name.)

Name a movie you own on DVD/VHS/whatever that no-one else on your friends list does: Romance - because I'm such a geek when it comes to films that are obscure, foreign *and* happen to feature a porn star (in a mainstream role) that can act his way out of a paper bag (Rocco Siffredi) - even if he does look kind of like the BNL road manager, Craig (Fin) Finley.

Name a place that you have visited that no one else on your friends list has: Elko, Nevada.

Just a couple of things ...

The asthma medicines seem to be helping. If nothing else, I am sleeping through the night, and my Peak Flows haven't gotten below 300 so far. Although, I've been hitting the MaxAir/ Albuterol a little more than I'd like the past couple of days ... which means that I've been nice and jittery from that ... which means that I've been cutting back on my caffeine to prevent any weirdness or funky interactions. (It seems that my chest is trying to clear out its funkiness - in the process, I've been occasionally symptomatic.)

I've been a good girl and have been tracking my Peak Flow three times a day - but being someone that's either oddly prescient ... or just paranoid ... I was staring to worry about where I'd find additional Peak Flow Diaries. Along comes the National Jewish Medical and Research Center - the #1 Respiratory Hospital in America, and their excellent resources for asthmatics, including an online Daily Peak Flow Diary (that can be printed and taken to the doctor), as well as ways for me to keep tabs on tests that have been performed, medications I may be taking, and any other pertinent information.

What's especially nice is that the online Diary allows me to track morning and night results, charts my progress, and even lets me know when I should use my rescue inhaler and/or contact my doctor, if necessary.

In other news, my buddy at the shelter, Zackery, may be getting put down soon. :(

Last week, he was bitten by another dog, who had gotten jealous of him over something. A few days after he was bitten, one of the staff members (someone that is well-acquainted with him) went to his cage, to clean up the area - and was bitten. This was an unprovoked attack - she just went to the cage to do some cleaning, didn't even approach him, and he just up and bit her on the arm!

Apparently, since he's had a history of biting, and this instance was a sign of regression, there is a possibility that he may be put down, to prevent any further attacks on humans (staff, volunteers or G*d forbid, visitors...) or other dogs.

Yes, I am sad about this news - and, as deranged as it sounds, I keep thinking of The Onion "Point-Counterpoint" column with the border collie and his human: "We've sent Rex to live on a farm" / "They had me put to sleep" ... or something along those lines. I just keep telling myself that Zack is going to live on a farm, it's better this way ... and there will always be other cats and dogs at the shelter.

Well, that's how I looked post-allergy testing - I felt itchy in spots, and relieved to have a definite diagnosis, as well as knowledge of *exactly* what I am allergic to.

Anyways - to start from the start - I walked into the doctor's office, and aside from boxes of tissue on every table in the waiting room, he has a framed picture of the Fab Five (yes, [livejournal.com profile] full4zaccordion, I'm talking Queer Eye For The Straight Guy here).

When the good doctor came in and reviewed my chart, he said, "let me guess - you're a lesbian with cats. I could write a book about cases like yours." Then, he proceeded to tell me that he was one of the few gay allergists in town - outside of another doctor that came out a few years ago.

I mentioned that I was coming to him because of the dismissive treatment I received from the internist towards my asthmatic symptoms, and he replied, "well, you can dismiss her too." - later in the visit, he gave me a list of internists, putting an "L" by certain doctors' names (to indicate which ones are lesbians ... hehe). When he got to one doctor, he said, "I'm not sure if she is - but all signs point to it!" Gotta love that.

Oh yeah - perhaps I should talk about the outcome of the testing, eh?

The numerous pinpricks in my back (over 60) found that I am allergic to dogs, grasses and dust mites. Further testing - with allergens injected under my skin - found that I am allergic to cats, too.

The spirometer testing had me at 60% lung function prior to receiving a rescue inhaler treatment. Post-treatment, I was much better. The kicker? The doctor was sitting about five feet away from me, and could detect my wheezing. Yet, my internist, who was listening with her stethoscope, didn't hear a thing.

As for meds, I am supposed to stay off the Zyrtec - still. But, most likely, this is to make sure that my asthma medicines are working, and that the asthma is under control, before going back and treating the allergies.

To treat my asthma, I'm on Advair 100/50 for the long-acting inhaler, Albuterol for the rescue inhaler, and for emergency use only - Prednisone tablets.

I have a Peak Flow Meter, so I can monitor my lung function through the day - as well as when I start to have symptoms, and an Asthma Action Plan, so I know what to do should an attack happen.

It's official - yet again.

Steven Page can have my Jewish Mormon Pagan Babies. :)

As though it's not already friggin' cold in San Francisco ... I'm being insane and playing Barenaked for the Holidays (I'm such a fangirl, I know).

Anyways ... "Jingle Bells" started out sounding like Steve had been playing his Dashboard Confessional/ Story of the Year/ Sunny Day Real Estate albums entirely too often ... then it got serious ... the it got wickedly unorthodox, with him singing the childhood refrain of "Jingle Bells, Batman smells ..." At that, I found myself crushing all over again.

So, yeah ... it's all good, my lovelies. :)

"I do not believe the wicked always win. I believe our despair is a lie we are telling ourselves.

"In many other periods of history, people, ordinary citizens, routinely set aside hours, days, time in their lives for doing the work of politics, some of which is glam and revolutionary and some of which is dull and electoral and tedious and not especially pure — and the world changed because of the work they did. That's what we're starting now. It requires setting aside the time to do it, and then doing it.

"Not any single one of us has to or possibly can save the world, but together in some sort of concert, in even not-especially-coordinated concert, with all of us working where we see work to be done, the world will change. And we have to do it by showing up places, our bodies in places, turn off the f*cking computers, leave the Web and the Net — and show up, our bodies at meetings and demos and rallies and leafleting corners.

"Because this is a moment in history that needs us to begin, each of us every day at her or his own pace, slowly and surely rediscovering how to be politically active, how to organize our disparate energies into effective group action — and I choose to believe we will do what is required."

- Tony Kushner, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright
