Laundry is dangerous
Jan. 16th, 2008 07:38 pmWell, that's what I discovered last month.
I had put clothes into the dryer, and as I was closing the door, I rammed my thumb into the outside of the door. I didn't think much of it, to be honest. It was like, "well, that hurt" and the pain seemed to go away fairly quickly.
Fast forward to about a week or so later. My thumb started hurting when I'd apply pressure on something (i.e., flushing the toilet) and I'd decided that maybe I should try some kind of bandaging for it. I used what was basically an ACE wrap sewn into a small finger-cot style as well as an aluminum finger splint. I'd figured that it was probably just a sprain at worst.
As it goes, in the past week, it has gotten worse. So, I've made an appointment to see the orthopedist next week (earliest I could get in) to get this checked out. To see if it is indeed a sprain, or if those are just the famous last words,"It's just a flesh wound!" "It's just a sprain" that precede finding out that I've fractured my thumb. Along with feeling like a total ass for waiting this long on something like that. In addition, I've taped my thumb and started using an actual ACE wrap to try and keep it as immobile as possible - bending my thumb and screaming "FUCK!!" may not be the best thing to do at work. I'm also taking Advil every several hours, as well as trying to practice the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevation) treatment.
What's also bad is having to tell the story of what happened and how I injured myself. Maybe I should come up with a story that's far more interesting than, "oh, I jammed my finger into the dryer door". Any ideas?
