"God Won't Hot Sauce You ... But You Need To Learn Consequences" {Or, the new Christian method of corporal punishment - AKA: "WWBWD? - What Would Blair Warner Do?"}


I swear, I'm not making it up. According to Christian circles, Hot Saucing the tip of your wee bairn's tongue is the way to punish them - without really punishing them.

What does this mean? Well, besides McIlhenny experiencing a spike in their sales - due to Upstanding Christian Parents using Tabasco in an almost sadistic manner - there will be the spawn of those Upstanding Christian Parents, afraid of anything beyond the utterly banal for the rest of their days, associating it (in an almost-Pavlovian sense) with punishment and negativity.


So, I leave it to you all to discuss, debate and decimate. Hot Saucing: Legitimate Punishment Method - or Borderline Child Abuse?

My aunt used to do that to my cousins. Granted, shortly after telling the family that that was her discipline plan, she had a mental breakdown... But we found bottles of the stuff in every travel bag the kids had. We were all quite disgusted.

I'd be disgusted, too!

I can understand wanting to discipline a child - without resorting to measures that could be construed as physically abusive ... but even the hot saucing could be seen as physically abusive.

Wouldn't that be kinda dangerous? I mean, unless the parent was sadistic, they wouldn't be using the most potent hot sauce, but still....if used often often I would think it would burn their tougue, or do something funky to their taste buds...

From what the article was stating, there are experts (physicians, social workers, et al) saying that it could be dangerous - that a child could have an allergic reaction to the capsacin(sp?) in the hot sauce ... and some Child Protective Service offices regard it as an extreme punishment, akin to having a child kneel in a gravel pit - with their knees exposed.

years ago, my brother used to chew on his shirts constantly. My mom used to kid around and say she was going to start putting hot sauce on his shirt to keep him from doing it. but she never did, and i don't think she was ever serious about it. once he realized he looked like a goof with ripped colars (from chewing), he stopped.

in any case, i think it's a little screwy. I'd never try anything spicy after that. then again, I still think kids do need a good spanking every now and then. so take that for what it's worth. *shrug*

Yeah, it's quite screwy. I've nothing against spanking a kid when its deserved - and I think that hot-saucing a kid's tongue is almost extreme!

Hot saucing didn't work on me because I liked spicy foods my whole life. That's what happens when you're an arab raised by a mexican. ;)

So I don't know... It's better than my punishments. Silent treatment from mom for weeks at a time except for at night when by bare butt was beaten with the belt (say that 10 times fast) I think is worse than hot sauce on the tongue. I mean, if anything, the kids gonna get used to it and it will no longer be affective.
