Let Your Freak Flag Fly!
Jun. 25th, 2004 09:31 amIt's that time of year in many parts of the country - Queer Pride Weekend!
In my new Fair City of San Francisco, well, we're really going all out and full-on ... of course. Just walk down Market Street and see all the rainbow flags that have been flying for the past several weeks. See the few cool little indie shops and their queer-friendly rainbow/pride displays (yay for Patrick & Company Office Supplies and Pearl Art Supplies)!
Come and see the tourists gawking at us workaday sorts, like we're circus freaks. (Oh, wait - that's every day. They seem to forget that San Francisco is just like their own city ... okay, so we're a little more grandiose and out there on a daily basis in some ways ... that we also work, go to school, eat, sleep, shop, and manage to somehow co-exist in this space.) Sorry, just a contentious spot with me, as you can guess.
Anyways, the Dyke March is on Saturday afternoon, with Saturday evening offering up a whole assortment of things to do ... and leaving me a bit discombobulated, as you can probably guess! How else is a girl to feel when you've got The Fencesitter's Ball, Pansy Division at Café Du Nord, and Jai Rodriguez (yes, Queer Eye's Culture Vulture) at Ruby Skye - all happening on the same night?!?
I'd love to go to The Fencesitter's Ball, just to hang around other bis ... but I'd risk feeling crowded out for lack of coolness or sex appeal or even skinniness.
Jai is cute as hell, but I don't know if I'd want to be around a crowd of swanning fag hags and queer boys (and bois), just to hear him sing a few songs.
Then, there's Pansy Division - SF queer punk. :) And one of the opening acts sounds positively riotous - The Ga-Gas (pronouced "gay-gays"), an all-male Go-Gos tribute. Besides, I remember how my boy in college, Mykel, and I would try to go & see Pansy Division when they came to St. Louis - only to be thwarted, because the shows were cancelled for whatever reasons! {Side note - I've always had much love for Lisa, who runs the Hi-Pointe Bar in St. Louis. She's given the Non-Prophets a home base on Thursday nights - and when Pansy Division came to St. Louis, they always played the Hi-Pointe.}
And, of course, there is Sunday. The day that everything happens. :^D The parade, the booths, the celebrations - everyone having a gay old time, so to speak!
So, if you're gonna be in San Francisco, come to Pride!
Even if you're not gonna be in SF - go to the Pride celebration in your city. It's fun - cute boys and girls, free condoms and lube, great entertainment, what's not to love? ;)
