Yes, the Girl Scouts got me - it's cookie time in San Francisco, and the girls are very crafty, being stationed in the Financial District, getting us while we're on lunch breaks, or before and/or after work. That, and it probably doesn't help that I *love* Samoas, Tagalongs and Thin Mints (but who doesn't love Thin Mints?).

Once upon a time, about 25 years ago, I was a cookie shill Girl Scout. Only in the Girl Scouts long enough to be a Pixie, a Brownie and finish one year of being a Junior - mom pulled me out when I was about 10. I'd asked why I was taken out of the group, and my mom said it was because they supported the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment). When I asked her what was so bad about it, she just said that it meant that women could be drafted into the military, too - and left it at that.

But, I dye grass ... errrrm, digress. If I even told the girls that I was a Girl Scout (you know, back in the Jurassic Era. Yep, I sold cookies cave to cave and made Buddy Burners alongside Pteryodactls and T-Rexes) and how long ago it was, I would get looks of "woman, are you insane?" and the younger girls looking at me like "you actually sold the cookies door-to-door? You're as old as my mom!" So, it's much easier for me to keep my trap shut, buy a box or two of the cookies and wish the girls luck on their sales.

i used to sell them door to door too. now they just station themselves in front of a CVS or wal-mart, or here in the city in the lobby of the prudential building. they also have their moms bring the sheets into the office and stick them on the desk of their administrative assistant!

i am a big fan of samoas and thin mints too. they are yummy!

Oh yeah - when my sister sold them, my mom and I took the sheet to our respective offices, and sold cookies that way.

Now, they're in front of the BART stations, at the corners of main intersections in some parts of town, and even the grocery stores. Smart way to do it - get everyone when they're not exactly planning to buy cookies!

I miss samoas.

When did they change the door-to-door rules? I remember doing that as late as middle school for stupid school fundraisers.

I don't know when they changed the rules - probably within the last 5 years, I'd imagine.

And those school fund-raisers sucked!! I'd rather eat glass than have to try and make stained glass sun-catchers seem like something worth buying.

We were always stuck selling overpriced wrapping paper. I never understood why they didn't have the option of just letting people cut a check directly to the school.

I remember the wrapping paper - one of my co-worker's kids sell that stuff. And it would be so much easier to just make out a check to the school. But, no ... gotta make the young ones go out and sell useless crap!

its so the kids can feel good about helping the school through hard work and dedication.

or something.

yeah, there was some life lesson in there we were supposed to learn!

Yes - if the life lesson was "rejection - suck it up kiddos!" then they succeeded in that.

Them little skanks got me in Burbank. They were cleverly parked right outside the big movie mega-complex. Got my thin mints and tried the cafe cookies with the cinnamon. Yeah no, not real big on those.
