You wake up in the morning to NPR, as always, and hear the newscaster talk about a suburb in your town. Because the suburbs aren't named specifically outside of St. Louis, unless something drastic happens.
That's exactly what happened to me. Lying in bed and trying to wake up, I hear something about someone opening fire at a Kirkwood City Council meeting. Then, I hear the gunman's name, and my first reaction is, "oh shit - I knew him!"
Here's the story presented by the local NPR station in St. Louis - Six dead, two wounded in shooting at Kirkwood council meeting
This is the story presented by the AP - Gunman kills 5 at Mo. council meeting
Like I said, I knew him. He was a client of my prior employer's, and I remember that he was a pretty decent guy. He'd call, or come in, and be very nice - sometimes, almost cheerful, always smiling. Things certainly do change in the span of 4 - 5 years, and this would definitely be one of those instances. And you know how people say, "we never would've guessed..." when something major like that happens? I think I know exactly what they mean when they say it.
