As many problems as I've had with religion (especially Christianity), I will say that when I heard about Revolution NYC - the church led by Jay Bakker (yes, Jim and Tammy Faye's son), I thought it sounded like a good alternative.

When I was listening to one of the sermons via iPod, I loved that the minister (Marc Brown for this one) started the sermon with "I hope you don't mind that I'm drinking a beer...". I just thought, "I Love You!"

Sure, I've tried an all-gay church (MCC), but it felt a bit exclusionary (if that's even a word) - it was never said, it just felt that way. I like that Revolution is gay-affirming (including a gay pastor) and welcoming of so many different backgrounds and opinions. Also, they support equal rights - which is also quite awesome.

And the icon? A t-shirt sold by Revolution. :-D

Oh, I will have to check them out. I just heard about them the other day, when Tammy Faye died.

I like when a sermon starts with beer drinking. Really they all should!

It's worth a try! I was starting to listen to one of the sermons about gays, but decided against it, since I didn't want to be turning into some mess of religious emo-ness.

But, hey ... if the pastor's willing to drink a beer while offering the sermon, I'm good to go!

That is kind of how I feel right now. That just about anything could make me all emo and ridiculous...so I might hold off on anything like that for now.

he used to have a little documentary called 'one punk under god'.

he visited his mom and talked about his dad and to him on the phone a little bit. he's got big emotional problems with his dad.

they also visited the now defunct former resort/holy land that his parents used to own/run, which was really interesting in a heart-breaking kind of way.

i am not sure where you could see episodes, but it was tres interesting :)

The documentary is available on DVD - so I may have to check that out, and I don't blame him for having problems with his dad!

I remembered hearing about the resort/amusement park thing, when I was a kid (a friend's parents would watch "PTL" a lot - and I remember Tammy Faye talking about her kids, "Tammy and Jamie Child" - I felt sorry for Jay being called "Jamie Child"), so I can only imagine what the excesses were like.
