It was Date NightTM at our place - so we'd gone to dinner and a movie (or two).

Dinner was at a kinda dive-y place called Tommy's Joynt - it's been around at least 60 years, and for a long time, it was a Metallica hangout (just thought I'd throw that in there ... you know, for context or something). Tommy's is the kind of place where you get meat in almost any form. And they serve meat alongside your meat. I'm sure even the desserts are made of meat.

Still, it was pretty good - not the best, but not the worst. I'd probably just go back to raid the pickle barrel and drink Cokes.

As for the movies - we saw "Sicko" and "Ratatouille". "Sicko" was one of those films that just blew me away. Hearing the stories of people that went bankrupt trying to pay medical bills; being denied care for some absolutely minor things, so on and so forth. It did get to me - especially since my parents almost filed for bankruptcy because of all the medical bills incurred while my stepdad was ill ... and the bills were still coming after he died.

It bothered me that we're a country that can spend shitloads of money to fight the monsters and beasts under our beds. Enemies that may very well be figments of our imagination. But, we can't even begin to fathom having any sort of parity when it comes to health insurance. Because, you know, God forbid anyone actually be healthy.

All that aside, I was watching the film and thinking, "I'm so recommending this to my mom ... even if she thinks that Michael Moore is a liberal asshole rabble-rouser." She's been through so much with (mis-)managed care that I'm surprised that she isn't calling for universal health care!

So, long story short - I really recommend the film. And be prepared to be pissed off.

Now, "Ratatouille" - I liked this film. Then again, I'm a fan of pretty much all of the Pixar films. The animation was amazing - the rats looked almost realistic, and it was all quite awesome. I'd heard that it was the animated version of "Big Night", and I could certainly see the resemblance. It's one of those films that, if you haven't eaten, it could make you hungry!

It wasn't as great as "Cars" or "Monsters, Inc." - but still, a good film. A lot of goodness for the kids, and something for the adults, too. {One of my favorite lines was from food critic Anton Ego, in response to his being so skinny for a food critic: "If I like something, I swallow" - Insert snickering from adults here}

So, that was my evening. Now, I need to go to bed, since I have to work tomorrow. *sigh*

I put out *before* the date ... so there.

Sicko was an amazing film. I was just blown away by it. It certainly reminded me of why I love universal health care so much. I have never had to worry about anything like that. It was also interesting to see what some Americans seem to think about our health care system. Like we don't get to chose our doctor (we do!)

The stuff about Cuba was really interesting too!

I think a lot of it has to do with the naysayers. They want to scare the bejesus out of everyone by saying "if we went to something like that, you'd only be able to see a specialist in XYZ in a few states." Or saying that "waits in the ER would be exorbitant". Which is bollocks, really. Kellie had to go to the ER in Toronto, and she was seen rather quickly - and didn't have to pay anything for the service. :-)

Personally, I think it's cool that in a country like England, the doctors are rewarded for working on making their patients *healthier* and helping them out, instead of denying them treatments they might need - because that's how they'd get rewarded by some HMO.

Totally beside the point ... 'scuse me while I squee for a minute over Travie and the puggy-puppy! :-)
