The Good
(1) I was supposed to have a meeting with a client today - but she had to re-schedule due to a family emergency. No worries. Instead, we'll be meeting next Tuesday.

(2) I just saved a whole bunch of money by switching to Geico! No, seriously, thanks to a former co-worker sending over my old policy number, I was able get (finally) get my renter's insurance re-written to California - with the same carrier, and without being declined for having no credit whatsoever. Yes, this means that I was just like the doctor that nags patients to stop smoking - yet smokes like a chimney himself.

The Bad
(1) I have a couple of idiot clients. One seems to have the attention span of Dory, from Finding Nemo - and the other likes withholding information, so he can go to the Big Boss to whine about my "ineptitude".

(a) "Dory" had some items moved from one policy onto another - because the rates were better, and also for the sake of consolidation. A few months later, she called me, upset over the changes and the rates - wanting to know why it was even done in the first place. I explained to her, as simply as possible, why the changes were made. She understood - and agreed that it was the best way to go.

Fast-forward to this week, and "Dory" seems to have forgotten, yet again, why this was even done. So. I print out enough paperwork on her policies to wallpaper the office - and pore over the current policy, the prior year's policy, the endorsements. Even the separate policy that was cancelled last year. Do the calculations on both policies to figure out the breakdown of the insurance cost for each. item. individually. And come to the conclusion that she's saving about $500 by having the coverage consolidated. Once my boss explains this to her over the phone, she is placated. Well, at least for the next 3 months.

(b) As for my International Man of Mystery (or "Mystery Date") - well, he asks to have items added to his policy. Fine, well and dandy. This can be done. Turns out, that the way I was given the information was incorrect - and the company sent me some lovely little nastygrams asking for detailed information. Yes - there are 130something pieces of scheduled glass. I'll get the client to send me a list of each item, right away. Same for those damn rugs.

Of course, the lists that I get are incomplete. The glass items list is half-assed, with additional items written in, some items have no prices, others no catalog numbers. And don't even ask about the list for the rugs. Sure, I get details - measurements and slightly vague descriptions - but no prices.

So, I do what I assume to be the right thing. Which, as one can guess, is never the right thing to do. For the glass items, I search through the catalog provided by the client - as well as the website - for prices on items. For the rugs, I use my grade school math to do an average figure. Instead, Mystery Date gets his Pissy Pants on - and comes to the Big Boss. With a complete list for the rugs - including the actual costs for each one. (The line to smack Mystery Date forms right behind my co-workers and I.) What does he do? Demands a new account rep. Fine - hope you like the new rep, and enjoy the fact that she can be far more cynical than I am.

(2) In another example of "f*ck doing the right thing - it just gets me f*cked" - I had a client that moved out of state, and they needed to have auto insurance for the new state. When I talked to our company underwriter, to see if we could write the coverage ourselves, I found out that we couldn't - and that we should instead recommend a local agent for the client. So, I did just that. Only to have Big Boss come around and tell me that said agent is pursuing our client like a dog in heat - which Big Boss thinks is bogus.

And to add insult to injury, he (Big Boss) called me "Jody". Not once. Not twice. But THREE TIMES. I managed to avoid laughing until he'd left, and shut the door behind him. {Jody was an employee who left the agency at the end of 2003.}

(3) Since I was supposed to have a meeting with a client this afternoon - but got wrapped up in spending most of my day figuring out "Dory's" problems - I didn't get to eat lunch. It's almost 4 p.m. here, and I still haven't had lunch yet. Maybe I'll go to Starbucks and get a sandwich or some fruit salad.

The Indifferent
(1) Did I mention that I haven't had lunch yet?

(2) Thanks for reading this - if you have. I appreciate knowing that someone, somewhere is reading along with my rambling and prattling on. Even when it has to do with insurance.

Hank, step off. Jody is MY bitch. I'm second in line after her girl, Mandy.

I enjoyed hearing about your day. I can sympathize with the Dory bit. I have a Dory type at work that I had to keep from helping a doctor try to do what we are not technologically able to do.

I so meant to use this icon, but I like the sentiment for a bad day at work. So you get two-two-two-Sarah icons.

Oh, we have producers doing that *all the time*. Which only serves to piss off the clients, when we have to deliver the ugly truth.
