Jul. 4th, 2007 10:06 pmIt was Date NightTM at our place - so we'd gone to dinner and a movie (or two).
Dinner was at a kinda dive-y place called Tommy's Joynt - it's been around at least 60 years, and for a long time, it was a Metallica hangout (just thought I'd throw that in there ... you know, for context or something). Tommy's is the kind of place where you get meat in almost any form. And they serve meat alongside your meat. I'm sure even the desserts are made of meat.
Still, it was pretty good - not the best, but not the worst. I'd probably just go back to raid the pickle barrel and drink Cokes.
As for the movies - we saw "Sicko" and "Ratatouille". "Sicko" was one of those films that just blew me away. Hearing the stories of people that went bankrupt trying to pay medical bills; being denied care for some absolutely minor things, so on and so forth. It did get to me - especially since my parents almost filed for bankruptcy because of all the medical bills incurred while my stepdad was ill ... and the bills were still coming after he died.
It bothered me that we're a country that can spend shitloads of money to fight the monsters and beasts under our beds. Enemies that may very well be figments of our imagination. But, we can't even begin to fathom having any sort of parity when it comes to health insurance. Because, you know, God forbid anyone actually be healthy.
All that aside, I was watching the film and thinking, "I'm so recommending this to my mom ... even if she thinks that Michael Moore is a liberal asshole rabble-rouser." She's been through so much with (mis-)managed care that I'm surprised that she isn't calling for universal health care!
So, long story short - I really recommend the film. And be prepared to be pissed off.
Now, "Ratatouille" - I liked this film. Then again, I'm a fan of pretty much all of the Pixar films. The animation was amazing - the rats looked almost realistic, and it was all quite awesome. I'd heard that it was the animated version of "Big Night", and I could certainly see the resemblance. It's one of those films that, if you haven't eaten, it could make you hungry!
It wasn't as great as "Cars" or "Monsters, Inc." - but still, a good film. A lot of goodness for the kids, and something for the adults, too. {One of my favorite lines was from food critic Anton Ego, in response to his being so skinny for a food critic: "If I like something, I swallow" - Insert snickering from adults here}
So, that was my evening. Now, I need to go to bed, since I have to work tomorrow. *sigh*
I put out *before* the date ... so there.
