Retail Therapy
Sep. 29th, 2002 11:25 pmThis afternoon, I went window shopping at a shopping center in town that re-opened recently. When I say re-opened, I mean that it went from being this tragical, drecky near-hellhole where a sloppy drag queen worked at the McDonald's in what passed for a food court and half the shops were vacant.
Now, they've got a few big department stores (Nordstrom and Lord & Taylor), lots of cool shops, an actual food court (with a Sonic restaurant, no less!) and all kinds of other perks. So, I went and walked until my feet were begging for mercy.
I'd never been to Nordstrom, so I was losing my Nordstrom virginity today. I'm not much on make-up, but when I saw Kiehl's, Stila, Bobbi Brown, philosophy and Laura Mercier in the cosmetics department, I almost had an orgasm. :) Most of the stuff was waaaaaay out of reach price-wise, but I did get a makeover at the Stila counter (yay!) and commisserated with the gal about Kevyn Aucoin's work, bought some Smith's Rosebud Salve (something I'd been looking for for years), and even got the gal at the Bobbi Brown counter to give me a sample of one of the philosophy products. :)
Speaking of samples, did I mention that I think I have enough fragrance samples to keep me in a differen fragrance every day for almost a month? I even got a sample of some Origins Ginger shower gel at another department store.
When I went to The Body Shop, to pick up a small bottle of Tobacco Flower perfume (it does smell good - better than the name might let on), I was in line to check out behind a woman with a coupon for a free tub of The Body Shop's Body Butter. I asked her where she'd gotten the coupon, and the saleslady overheard me, and said that since I was making a purchase, she'd give me a free tub of the Body Butter as well. That was incredibly nice, since I was spending less than $10, and the Body Butter alone is $16 (and it's the Nut Butter - made with Brazil Nuts, and smells yummy)! {Any BNL fans that remember Steve's Brazil Nuts comment can go ahead & insert that banter here.}
Since my parents are talking about wanting to get a Sleep Number bed, and keep making plans to go to a mall near my mom's work to try the bed out (no, not *that* way, ya pervs!), I ended up going to the Sleep Number store to check out the bed myself. Verrry nice beds. Even if you almost feel like you're sinking into the bed when it's adjusting to your "sleep number" - since the bed is made up of air chambers, it can be inflated and deflated to suit the needs of the person sleeping on it. (What's really good is that it's like 2 separate beds under the mattress, so each person can adjust it. If mom wants the bed softer, she can have it that way. If dad wants it firmer, he can have that, too.)
Somehow, I managed to get out with spending less than $50 - it was a lot of "after California..." deliberation on my part, I admit. If nothing else, I've got a lot of perfumes to dabble in, some things to wish for (hints to the family at Christmastime!), and a prettyful, feasible look courtesy of Tracy at the Nordstrom Stila counter. :)
Although, two things were definitely "I've Gotta Have It Before California" items, both from a shop called Torrid (kinda like Hot Topic for fat chicks. woohooo): One being a t-shirt that says "Good girls are bad girls that haven't been caught yet." and the other being a mirrored ID case with a purple flame design on the outside of the case. Can you just see me whipping *that* out to hand someone a business card? ;)
