Sep. 27th, 2002 10:25 pmEspecially if she's a Dead Milkmen-listening, barenaked.net message board-Devil's Advocating Pagean girl. (Yes, it's true. I don't visit the site for weeks, but when I come around, it's to be a smartass in random spots.)
Tonight, I was advocating for file-sharing, standing up for the right to write Barenaked Ladies fanfic (among other fanfics), even mocking the whole "are they, or aren't they, watching the board?" issue.
For those of you that have quit visiting the board (I don't blame you) and those that have no idea what the hell I'm talking about, I'm going to hide my assorted ramblings behind a cut text ... right
here. ;)
On Fanfic:
"I'm ready for my impending crucifixion, Mr. DeMille..."
I write the stuff. It's written in such broad generalities that I could very easily change names and you probably wouldn't have the slightest idea that what you were reading was fanfic at one time.
I also respect that there are people that don't like the stuff and/or don't want to read it, so I don't post it anywhere that it wouldn't be welcome. Because of that, most of it stays within a small circle of friends.
I respect that they (meaning BNL) are people with families and feelings and everything else, so this isn't wish fulfillment. I mean, for the love of Gord, I may think Steve is hot, but I've got a girlfriend. Obviously I'm not gonna be gung-ho to do unspeakable things with him.
Most fanfics are good - very creative and well-written. Some are just plain ooky (boy bands, Harry Potter, etc.). And I avoid the ooky stuff. I see nothing wrong in using fanfic as a way to develop your own creative voice, or to even explore writing in general.
Like Nicole (Driver) said, I've got a life. I have a job, I have friends, family, a girlfriend ... fanfic is just something I do on occasion.
Cookies to anyone that managed to get through this. Especially if you don't want my head on a plate for being honest.
On File-Sharing:
Playing Devil's Advocate ... Yet Again. >:-)
There is nothing inherently wrong with file-sharing.
Half the people here are gritching-and-moaning, getting all stürm-und-drang over this ... sounding like the RIAA. Would you like some cheese with your whine?
Anywho ... at least 25 years ago, the RIAA had its collective panties in a bunch over cassette tapes, and the capability to record albums & such. They were so afraid that cassette tapes would spell the demise of the recording industry as it was known. Looks like that was just a bit of paranoia, eh?
The problem isn't file-sharing. The problem is the dreck being offered up as "music" nowadays. The reason the RIAA is up in arms is because people are refusing to by crap CDs - especially at the obscenely expensive rates they charge - not because we're sharing MP3s over the Internet.
So, think about that one for just a minute. And quityerbitchin'.
On the "Are They (or Aren't They) Watching The Board?" Issue:
Someone brought up the fact that apparently there is a "Bad List". People that are a bit ooky - or too subversive, or whatever. So, I had to speak my mind on that one.
"The "Bad List", eh? Oh Good Gord ... starting up internet legends, or trying to scare us again? (Realizes that there may very well be a "Bad List" ... just in a wierd mood tonight)
"Maroon (one of the board members that, as a running joke, swears that he is Steven Page) ... hot damn! Even if Readum & Weep want you to 'cease & desist' your whole "Being Steven Page" thing ... I'll still work on the occasional cyber adulation thing.
"And if you thought you were on the bad list, how would you introduce yourself? "Hi Tyler! I'm a subversive ass meanie-slash-small-time smut maven. I'm probably on the bad list, too! Bye!" Okay, maybe not. Although I'd probably go stupid and either admit to being a Smut Maven ... or approach Ed and only be able to say "Quark!", then come away feeling like a total dork. (not like any other day of the week ... hehe)
"Now, I'm rambling. But go on with the Bad List discussion. It's kind of interesting. As long as it doesn't get too wierd, y'know."
And that is how my mind works sometimes. :P
