Spit it out, the sad truth ...
Dec. 8th, 2003 09:19 amWell, I did it. I told my family that my going to California wasn't just for a couple of weeks, to go on interviews & such (as they'd want) - but to actually move out there.
As you can guess, they weren't very happy. Of course, they kept saying, "we don't want to discourage you from doing this..." while going on to discourage the move in the next sentence.
I can understand their point of view, and their logic - that it would be easier to get a job while I still have a job, and that I could/should just go out to SF for a couple of weeks to do some interviews, and *then* move once I have a job lined up. Rather than my plan of quitting my job, cashing in the 401(k), getting rid of much of my stuff and going out there sans job.
Even if I told them that I'd get a part-time job at Starbucks, and that even part-time people there get health insurance, they'd still try and shoot it down. Even though they know that I'd be staying with Kellie until I get a place of my own, they'd probably find a loophole of some kind to exploit.
I *know* that it's probably not going to be extremely easy to find a place to live, and that the rents are expensive (pardon the sarcasm, but I know that "we're not in Kansas anymore"). But I feel like I've made a promise and a committment to someone that I love, and if I were to renege on that, it would kill us both (probably her more than me).
So just smack me on the ass and call me "Jane Divided", willya?

Date: 2003-12-08 11:19 am (UTC)If your parents are anything like mine, they're just worried about you and nervous about your leaving and don't know how else to show it. So they think of all the ways you can fail and try to warn you off, no matter what your plan is. If I told my parents I was going out interviewing, they'd tell me how bad the job market was... ;)
Anywho... It sounds like the move really is a good thing, no matter what they say, and I'm excited for you...
