Oct. 24th, 2003 10:46 amI'm not usually one for dissecting songs until they're completely unrecognisable - but I will humor those that like that kind of thing. Admittedly, it's kind of fun to see what 15 people think of one song - because you'll get 15 different opinions ... only to find out 6 months later, when a band member is interviewed, that the interpretation/dissection/psychoanalysis was either spot-on or so far off the mark.
The reason I'm going on and on like this is because of what Steve had written in the Blog yesterday, about Elliot Smith, and "War On Drugs". If you haven't read this entry yet - I should warn you ... having Kleenex nearby may be a good idea.
The first time I'd heard "War On Drugs", I thought of the film Kids In The Hall - Brain Candy, which was a total send-up of the pharmaceutical industry's rush to make us all happy, at any cost. So, yeah, I kind of caught onto the depression theme pretty quickly - and as you can guess, it's not a song that I can easily listen to right now. It's not that I don't like the song (I do like it), but it's just a little too emotionally overwhelming for me.

Date: 2003-10-24 08:58 am (UTC)As someone who's been in rehab 4 times and literally fights every day with trying to stay clean (but hides it surprisingly well), I hate it because it's a mirror reflection of myself and reminds me of a whole bunch of things I try to forget. I love it because I love how they seem to have "gotten" what it feels like without making it a pity trip or smarmy in any way. It's beautiful and makes you think but doesn't run a pity party, and I think it's amazing for that alone.
