Quick Family Update
Sep. 19th, 2003 04:47 pmWell, things are gradually looking up again.
My stepdad is on dialysis, but the doctors are saying that it'll most likely be a short-term thing. If nothing else, it is helping to keep the fluid on his lungs at bay, although a small amount still lurks - probably due to pneumonia. :-/
He's been allowed to eat "people food" again and is on a 1900-calorie Diabetics diet. After his first meal on Wednesday, he bitched about how awful the hospital food tastes. Mom and I were thrilled to hear him complaining, especially considering that at some points,we I almost wondered if he'd pull through.
This morning, he called my mom and asked for her to bring an Egg McMuffin to the hospital, so he could have a "decent" breakfast. When she got there, a nurse told her that he was in X-Ray, and wanted her to get down there with his food as soon as she arrived! So, she went down to X-Ray and saw him right as he was coming out, with one of the doctors nearby. The doc didn't mind that he was having McDonald's for breakfast - he was in agreement with my stepdad on the food tasting really awful, and said that having McD's on occasion was alright. :)
The rest of the family seems to be doing alright - every baby step towards better health has my mom positively euphoric. Taylor has become friends with a girl whose mother has been in the ICU for 3 weeks now, so when they're both at the hospital together, they keep each other company, which probably helps both of them. Tay's getting back into ice-skating, and that's a wonderful thing for her. It's her chance to interact with people besides home school classmates, visitors at the hospital and her mom - and it's something that she's loved doing for a long time.
