About a week ago, while walking home from the bus after work, I decided to do some variation of the splits on the sidewalk, in a pair of kind of slick-soled shoes. Needless to say, the road rash on my knee has healed very nicely - but my foot is another story. Still hurts like all hell, and it's all nicely swollen. :-/ So, I'm writing this entry while my foot is propped up and iced, and it's a nice little distraction from the pain. (Also a nice distraction is Advil. Lots of Advil.)

I'm officially a major-league nerd. WIRED magazine had a most excellent How-To guide in their August issue (cover geek: Stephen Colbert sawing into a video iPod), with information on how to be an expert on anything, turn your heavy-duty paper shredder into a pasta machine ... and even how to prepare for calamity. (Your insurance agent - not just me - will love you for it.) And yes, the preparing for calamity part was one of my favorites - although I loved Alton Brown's idea for the pasta machine, too.

Now, onto something more fun: my Cool Tunes recommendations. Pretty much everything listed here can be found on iTunes, or probably any other file-sharing program. And if you have any ideas/recommendations - let me know!
:-)

1. "Love My Way" - Grant Lee Phillips, Nineteeneighties - awesome cover of an already great Psychedelic Furs song.

2. "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" - Israel Kamakawio'ole, Alone in IZ World - screw Katharine McPhee's cover ... it pales in comparison to this one, which is absolutely gorgeous.

3. "Wonderwall" - Ryan Adams, 241 single - another cover song ... I didn't like the original version by Oasis, but Ryan Adams' version made me a fan.

4. "Idlewild Blue (Dontchu Worry Bout Me)" - OutKast, Idlewild Soundtrack - it's OutKast, and Andre 3000 doing what he does best. What else can I say?

5. "Round -N- Round" - Lou Barlow, Emoh - Sebadoh vocalist Lou Barlow manages to cover Ratt's '80s hair metal anthem in his own way, and totally owns it.

6. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" - Fall Out Boy, My Heart Will Always Be The B-Side To My Tongue - I loved the original version by Joy Division, and FOB manage to turn this angsty tune into an emo-worthy anthem for a new generation of gothy shoe-gazer wannabes.

7. "Cherry Cola" - Eagles of Death Metal, Death By Sexy - Pure damn-near cheesy fun. Besides, who couldn't love an album called "Death By Sexy"?

8. "Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have With Her Clothes On" - Panic! At The Disco, A Fever You Can't Sweat Out - This one just feeds into my fetish around Mormon boys swearing ... Brendan Urry singing about offering a girl "... a hotter touch, a better fuck ...", well, yeah.

9. "What They Do" - The Roots, Illadelph Halflife - This is a great song, and the video (if it can be found anywhere) completely ripped on rap videos and their cliches, by pointing out things like, what that champagne bottle really contained. ;)

10. "Flowers On The Wall" - The Statler Brothers, Pulp Fiction Soundtrack - Well before Gnarls Barkley made insanity sound like fun with "Crazy", this song was out in the '70s, all about the fun that could be had while insane.
