Well, I have returned from Silicone Valley intact and alive. The Barenaked Ladies concerts were so amazing. Lots of fun, kind of crazy - although Alanis sounds better singing her own songs, that is, when I even bothered to take the earplugs out and stick around to hear her - instead of milling around with my lovelies (Kellie, Nick, Jeska, Michael and Barbara), being snarky towards the creepy fans, and on the off-chance, getting to say hello to a Ladie. :)
The after-show experience was more fun - especially going to Electric Lotus for some excellent Indian food with my friends. We got to sit in a booth, in a rather intimate setting, sharing appetizers and discussing the show and the creepy fans we'd had dinner with the night before. Always a fun way to spend a birthday eve.
As for my birthday, we spent the day going around La-La Land and Beverly Hills, visiting the LaBrea Tar Pits, the incredibly chi-chi Rodeo Drive (and buying lingerie one block over at Victoria's Secret on Beverly Blvd. - as well as checking out the goodies at the Roots store), and witnessing the dichotomy of the Beverly Center with its fancy shops and beautiful people - and across the street, the Beverly Connection with its ghetto-strip mall feel and just getting by people.
Later in the evening, we were on the Sunset Strip - Whiskey A-Go-Go, Viper Room, etc. Stopped by the Hustler store, where I purchased a very rock-star pink vinyl wallet on a chain. Yeah, of all the toys and accoutrements in the place ... that's all I leave with. ;) The freakiest sight wasn't anything on display in the shop - oh no. It would have to be the mom sitting outside the Hustler store with her passel of munchkins - or the family with a small group of pre-teens that went into the Whiskey A-Go-Go.
We went onto Hollywood Blvd. for dinner at an excellent Japanese restaurant - since I was in the mood to try something different, being on vacation and all. We had some wonderful sushi and something called Shabu Shabu, which is like a Japanese version of fondue, served with meat (chicken, beef or seafood) or all vegetarian, along with rice and udon noodles, and vegetables (carrots, onions, bok choy, mushrooms, broccoli).
Since it was my birthday, my meal was free (yay!), and the waiter even brought out some green tea and azuki bean ice cream with two candles in it for me - no singing, thankfully! So, I felt quite special, spending the day with my good friends, sharing incredible Japanese food at dinner and feeling like quite the rock star in training.
There is much more to write ... but I will have to write it up later! I just wanted to get that posted for now - hope you're all having a great day!
