I was working obscenely late tonight - before taking tomorrow off - and I had a few minutes to kill before it was time to leave for my bus, so I thought I'd check my AOHell e-mail.

After having a craptastic day (I'll spare you the details, except to say that I almost got ripped a new orifice ... and not by a client), I had an e-mail from my friend Jim, someone that I'd almost sworn had dropped off the face of the earth.

He'd e-mailed over something he had written about writing, having his own website-cum-blog, and what he'd been up to since giving up the blog almost 2 years ago. Some of what he had to say had me laughing, which is just what I needed.

why Jim rocks my socks )

Jim always managed to get me smiling, and I loved his wit and big words. Alas, while at one time I had a crush on him, it wasn't meant to be. He grew up one of those nice Catholic School boys, the kind that I always managed to intimdate by being nervier than them. So, when I expresed even the slightest interest, it wasn't reciprocated. But I was definitely happy to get his e-mail today, to read his writings again.

Then, when I got home, I caught up with my friend Shawn, whom I haven't talked to in a long time. He's working on trying to graduate by Christmastime, so he's working himself to insanity, if you ask me. But it was great to talk with him, since I've missed him. He's a sweet guy, a bit flirtatious (not that I mind) and is good for getting me to laugh when I need it.

Again, it's another one of those one-sided crushes. I liked him, then he liked me. When there was mutual interest, there was that damn thing called distance. At the time, he wasn't interested in pursuing anything long-distance, so I girded myself against becoming interested in him beyond anything platonic.

But, tonight, it was nice to touch base with someone I haven't talked to in a while. Someone that manages to get me smiling, that thinks of me when he hears a random Barenaked Ladies song. It's good to have friends like that. They're few and far between.
