hofmannison, I will concede to your thinking that some of the "worst singer" contestants on "American Idol" are probably planted. I seriously doubt they'd get past the front desk at the cattle calls sounding that drecky.
It seems like the people that head up the show may have had 2 separate cattle calls: one for musicians, and one for people willing to make asses of themselves. You know, people that are willing to become caricatures of personality extremes. How else do you explain the flaming queens - and the women? ;)
In a way, I almost feel for the judges. Having to sit through days of auditions - men singing the same 5 R&B songs, as they seem to lack in imagination. Women picking out songs that require the most bombastic (not to be confused with Shaggy's "Boombastic", mind you), overwrought performances. People that look at Simon like he's the biggest dick *EVER* - because he has the chutzpah to actually be honest with them.
For some reason, it almost cracks me up to see people getting hyper-defensive when the judges dismiss them. Just because you're tone deaf, and your family doesn't have the heart (or guts) to tell you to not give up your day job ... doesn't mean that you should trot your ass onto national television to torture all of America. Someone was bound to tell you that singing isn't your niche - it just sucks for you that no one said anything until now.
None of this is meant to sound cocky or envious. I *know* that my singing is best reserved for Shower Karaoke, and I don't see my name in lights anytime soon. Probably because I'd suddenly turn reclusive and want to hide in a cave with D.B. Cooper or something. Just wanted to share my $.02 and then some on "American Idol".
