Surprise, surprise. It turns out that the form of therapy I was subjected to involved with (Reality Therapy) is supposed to have been a form of Cognitive therapy, where the focus is essentially on "living in the now, and not ruminating over your childhood". 'Scuse me while I die laughing here. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha *wheeze* hahahahahahahahahahahaha. Okay, better stop there before I risk a full-on asthma attack. (hello emo asthma!)

But you get the gist of it. As I'd previously mentioned, I spent almost a lifetime in therapy, talking about my past and my family issues. Not once discussing how to live with and/or resolve the ramifications of the past I had little to no control in.

This time around, I'm looking for Cognitive/Behavioral Therapists, since their focus is on "live in the now - and improve yourself", and also, they prefer to not drag out the treatments. I'd rather have one year with a good therapist than the 10+ years I had with a hack therapist.

So, that's that for now. We now return to our regularly scheduled program.

Sounds like you have definitely been in the wrong kind of therapy for sure. Cognitive/Behavioral Therapists sound like what you need. That is who I go too. Though right now I am just with a shrink, and he only talks about the medical aspect of it. He's good though, just not "all round" if you know what I mean.

Good luck!!!

I've got an appointment with one on Thursday, and I have a consultation set up with another therapist in early May (Dr. Nicely - that really is his name). And my internist handles the medication - so I don't have to worry there.

My prior shrinks/pdocs were only for medication maintenance - as I told my last pdoc in St. Louis, "well, I'm here for my 3000 mile med check!" (I really liked that doctor ... except he was quite expensive for such short visits.)

I am glad you have some appointments lined up.

I love my current doctor so much I am sticking with her even though, with my recent move, she is quite far away. Worth the drive though. Finding a doctor you like is so hard.

I once dated a guy who was in LOVE with that book, I'm okay You're okay, or something to that effect - the popularized version of Cognitive therapy. I suspect if works, if you're not a dink and actually do the work, but I will forever associate it with this one incredibly selfish person...

It's a good book, though, as far as those kinds of books go. Lots of worksheets.

Just that title, "I'm Okay, You're Okay", sounds like some horrid parody of a book! (Perhaps it was originally called, "I'm Okay, You're Fucking Hopeless"?) ;-)

I'd imagine that it is a great book ... except for the worksheets aspect!
