You are SOOO right. Gifts are just that. Gifts. As in something that someone did because they thought about you and thought you were special enough to get some of their hard earned money. And because they wanted to see you smile. That is *never* wrong.
My family didn't have a lot of money either. I really wanted a cabbage patch kid when I was little. My parents couldn't afford to buy me one, so they took me to the store to put one on layaway. My mother drove me there every week so I could give them my meager allowance. I did finally pay for the doll all on my own, but of course by then, they were way out of fashion. But I learned a valuable lesson in that experience.
