Thanks to Old Navy for getting the right ideas about plus size clothing.
Since I am an impatient bird, I couldn't wait until today to use my $10 off coupon, so I went to Old Navy last night to check out the Women's Plus department - located where Torpedo Joe's Restaurant once was. (Gold Star to Old Navy for keeping the Plus Size clothes on the same level as the Misses clothing, rather than having us cordoned off with Maternity, as though we're to be ashamed of being pregnant or curvy - or relegating us to the basement, in our own private gulag.)
The selection is currently comprised of basic pieces - t-shirts, jeans, skirts, dress pants, blouses, etc. At first, I kind of balked at the idea, wanting more variety and selection ... but, it does make sense to start out with the basic pieces. Step in that way, see how those items sell - go from there.
Old Navy's second Gold Star is for having a fit model with an actual figure: Abby - the cute fit model. Most companies/designers, when using plus-size fit models, prefer a girl that is a size 16 or 18 at the biggest. Ms. Abby is a size 20. :)
Since they're using a fit model with a real figure, this means that I can actually wear the jeans! It's not to say that I had problems before - but I was reaching a point where the size 20 was getting to be too big, and the size 18 was too tight. :-/ So, the Women's Plus in an 18 has come around at just the right time!
Also, I love that their shirts are cut with a little extra room in the chest, waist and arms - because if if wasn't one of those areas, it was another, that I'd have problems fitting when it came to the button-down shirts. (Usually the arms or bust)
Tonight, I have my coupon in hand. Kellie and I are going to dinner, and we'll be going to Old Navy afterwards. I plan to get a new khaki skirt, and perhaps one or two pair of dress pants for work. Maybe even a top. :)
I'm a very happy girl - and not just because it's Friday!

Date: 2004-07-16 03:53 pm (UTC)I'm interested to see how true to size the clothes are, though. Can you post about that and let me know? :) The Old Navy near where my mom is moving in 2 weeks has the department and I want to stop in and pick up some stuff. :)
I'm mostly hoping the pants not only come in my waist size, but a petite option as well, since I'm only 5'1"! Also, O hope the shirts has LOTS of extra bust room!

Date: 2004-07-17 10:04 am (UTC)Seems like whenever I go in to the Old Navy here I look at the XL sized shirts and realize they would fit my 12 year old average build sister perfectly.
It drives me crazy how they expect the average woman to fit into little kid sized clothes!
