Well, one of those Bret Easton Ellis books I'd read in college is coming out as a movie this fall. Yes, The Rules of Attraction, the book that got me listening to The Smiths' "Reel Round The Fountain" so much that it gave the Asshole another reason to whine about the music I listened to. Didn't matter. I still listened to The Smiths, unaware that years later, I'd hear Steven Page singing "Still Ill" and find myself feeling a bit pretty on the inside. ;)

Anyways, I mention it because last weekend, I had an odd dream about a former acquaintance/friend. This is someone I hadn't given much thought to in a long time - he seemed to have dropped off the face of the earth or something. Onto the dream. I was with Jim (the erstwhile friend) at a party, and for some reason, I left the party, getting into my parents' car, driving in reverse the entire time. I drove across the front yards of several people before crashing into the concrete steps at the house of one of my mom's best friends.

I guess I was driving in reverse only because the car has a manual transmission, and I never learned how to drive a stick shift. As for crashing into the steps - harkening back to a childhood incident involving riding my girlie-style dirt bike in the early evening, swerving about on the sidewalk until I had a meeting of my forehead and a set of concrete steps. Seven stitches - a short time before I turned seven. Still have the scar above my right eye to show for it, too.

What does any of that have to do with The Smiths? Well, the following morning, I thought of the fact that I'd dreamt of Jim, and instantly, "Reel Round The Fountain" popped into my head. "I dreamt about you last night/ and I fell out of bed twice/ you can pin and mount me like a butterfly/ But take me to the haven of your bed/ is something that you never said/ Two lumps please, you're the bee's knees, but so am I."
