Music Stuff

Okay ... there's a lot of new (and newer) musicians that I'm curious about, but I have no idea where to start when it comes to their music! To put it simply - I don't know what songs would be "first time listener" recommendations. I know, it sounds lame ... but, there it is. So, my lovelies, any help is most appreciated - I'll list the musicians, and you can recommend songs for me to get from iTunes! (Who knows, maybe some day, I can return the favor...)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs
The Gossip
Interpol
Goldfrapp

Any other recommendations are welcome! :-)

Bloc Party. British post-punk. They sound kinda like Franz Ferdinand, but a bit punk and, um, intelligible. They only have one album out so far and it's awesome.

And also Carbon Leaf :D Acoustic bass rock. Good stuff.

I've wanted to check out Bloc Party ... kept meaning to, but you know how good intentions are ... damn those intentions! {As for Franz Ferdinand ... well, I love songs about "beautiful boys dancing together". And don't even get me started on The Killers ... Brandon Flowers + eyeliner = Me wanting to do some "less-than-Good-Mormon" things with him. *g*}

Okay, then it's pretty certain you'll like Bloc Party if you like Franz Ferdinand ;)

You found one of my weaknesses: music. Here's my opinion.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs-
The two big singles are (of course) "Maps" and "Gold Lion". Also check out "Miles Away", "Bang", "Modern Romance", and the hard to find "Date with the Night".

Gossip-
I personally like "Lily White Hands", "Don't Make Waves", "Sweet Baby", and the Le Tigre remix of "Standing in the Way of Control".

Interpol-
The big singles were "Evil" and "Slow Hands". My picks: "NYC", "C'mere", and "Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down".

Goldfrapp-
Not my favourite, but to each their own. Maybe try "Number 1", the M83 remix of "Black Cherry", "Strict Machine", or "Beautiful".

As for my suggestions:

Afghan Whigs - "Gentleman"
Arcade Fire - "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)"
Badly Drawn Boy - "Once Around the Block"
Bright Eyes - "First Day of My Life"
My Morning Jacket - "Gideon"
New Pornographers - "Twin Cinema"
Old 97's - "The New Kid"
Elliot Smith - "Needle in the Hay"

I got plenty more where those came from ... if you like them.

Thanks for the suggestions! :)

I loved Afghan Whigs' - "Gentleman". Greg Dulli just laying his cards on the table and letting his woman know that he's a cad (especially on "Be Sweet").

With Old 97s - I had Fight Songs - great CD, but haven't listened to any of the CDs before or after that one. So, I'll have to check that out ... as well as Rhett Miller's solo work!

The other musicians kind of fall into the "I've heard a song or two ... but not too familiar otherwise" category! So, I'll be keeping quite busy, it seems!

Dead 60's are great
Scissor Sisters (if you're into gay glam rock... which I am)
Devotchka
The Faint
Muse

me doing body-slap rhythm... you know. the basics

[identity profile] hiddenmuse.livejournal.com 2006-04-07 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I *heart* Scissor Sisters. :)

And I'll check out the others ... I think I've heard a couple of Muse songs on my Yahoo! LaunchCast station - in between the Willie Nelson, John Coltrane, Metallica and Guster, no less!

Vix Maria! That's quite a melting pot; Coltrane, Nelson, Metallica (who blow)? wow

[identity profile] hiddenmuse.livejournal.com 2006-04-07 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah ... I know, Metallica. Go ahead and slag on me, I'm sure that half of my f/list will do the same! ;)

sorry I couldn't stop typing once I started....

I have all of those, but lately I've only been listening to the Gossip so uh that's all I feel qualified to recommend on. heh. If you're thinking of getting an album, get "that's not what I heard" and anything on it, I also like the songs on the real damage EP: "left out now" and "sleepers"

the ep is split with Tracy and the Plastics, actually a one-woman video performance collaboration of Wynn Greenwood. Highly recommend Tracy and the Plastics (where this icon comes from)...

OK so I love *all* of the music of these artists, but here's specific songs to get started...(get albums if ycan):

* Doria Roberts, "Perfect" "Hold On Me" (Alive and Well)

* the new Ben Harper is sooo incredible. "Both Sides of the Gun" "Black
Rain" "the Woman in You" "Faded" "Please Bleed" "Fight for your
Mind" "If the People Lead"... ok I gotta stop..

* also Le Tigre if you don't have em, get "This Island" or "Feminist
Sweepstakes" albums; "On the Verge" "TKO" "Viz" "New Kicks" "I'm So
Excited" "Punker Plus" "Fake French" "FYR" "Get Off the
Internet!" "Gone B4 Yr Home"

* Robots in Disguise; "D-I-Y" "Boys" "Hi-Fi" "Mnemonic" "Transformer"

* KT Tunstall; "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" "Universe &
U" "Suddenly I See"

* Jean Grae; "Don't Rush Me" "keep living" "How to Break Up With Your
Girl"

* Mos Def; "Hip Hop" "Ms. Fat Booty" "Do It Now" "Habitat"

* the Decemberists (Her Majesty is my fave) "Billy Liar" "Los Angeles,
I'm Yours" "Red Right Ankle"

* Sufjan Stevens (come on feel the Illinoise) album artist, no singles I
could say... maybe "The Seers Tower," "the Black Hawk War..", "One
Last 'WooHoo!'" but really get the album

* Stereo Total; "I Love You, Ono" "Supergirl" "Miau Miau" their cover
of "Push It" kicks my ass. "C'est La Mort"

* Manu Chao; "Clandestino" "Bongo Bong" "Welcome to
Tijuana" "Mentira" "Me Gustas Tu" "Promiscuity" "La Primavera"

um... yeah I love music too much, so yes please return the favor! who are some of your faves that i have to have to know listen to, 1st time listener picks?
