It bothers me that they're making assumptions on appearance alone. Who's to say that I'm not going to that store to find pants for my sister or looking for something to get a friend?
We might not look like the ideal demographic for the store ... but if we're ready to spend a few hundred dollars, they'll perk up like crazy!
As for some of the people working at the restaurants & stores - I think the big problem is apathy. Feeling like "this is only temporary ... until a job opens up at XYZ" or "...until I make Management."
In the meantime, Customer Service will feel like a nightmare because of many reasons that could start me on a never-ending diatribe!
