In today's episode of Sights In The City:

I've gotten used to seeing homeless people with animal companions, usually dogs. Every once in a while, I see a homeless person with a cat.

Today, I saw one such person, and was struck by the devotion he had to his cat. While the cat was perched on his human's shopping cart, the man was pouring clean cat litter into the cat's box. When he was done with this, he pulled out a comb, then proceeded to groom the cat, who sat on the cart and allowed his human to tend to him.

I thought about Cleo and Teak, and how I sometimes call them jackasses or make fun of them - but when it all comes down, I've bonded with them so strongly that I'd have a hard time living without them. Just like that man and his tortoishell cat on Market Street this morning.

I'm exactly that way with my cat, Kitty Man. We've been together since I moved to California in Q4 of 98. I would die if anything happened to him. He's like the son I never had. (He also thinks he's a dog.)

My pets are a part of my family. I've had my cat Cinder since '89...longer than I've been married and had kids! I don't know what I'll do when she finally leaves me!
